- Introduction
- This highly dynamic field is characterized by the rapid accumulation of
new information that contributes to our understanding of the aetiology
and pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease processes as well as to
the development of better therapeutic strategies. Particular emphasis is
put on the participation of both basic scientists and clinicians to
foster the transmission of new scientific findings into clinical
practice. Besides including invited keynote lectures, oral and poster
presentations and a young investigator session, the programme provides
ample time for discussion both within and outside the scientific
sessions.
For the first time, this year we are holding a PhD Course on the subject of pulse wave velocity, which is a direct marker of arterial stiffness and an independent cardiovascular risk factor. The PhD course will elucidate the theoretical concept of pulse wave velocity and the mechanisms contributing to its increase. An overview of recent experimental and clinical studies will be presented, that will demonstrate the current evidence for the association of pulse wave velocity and cardiovascular risk. The students will learn how pulse wave velocity can be experimentally determined or clinically estimated (various devices will be presented). Finally an outline of possible therapeutic approaches with anti-stiffness potential will be presented. Please indicate when you register if you want to attend the PhD Course.
