2012 has brought significant changes for the coal industry in Mongolia. From a reduction in international coal demand and prices to the introduction of the Strategic Foreign Investment Law prior to the election in July, domestic and foreign coal companies developing coal projects in Mongolia are forced to amend their strategies to accommodate the current markets. While recent announcements suggest that the approval of the Action Plan of the Government for 2012 to 2016 bodes well for foreign investment opportunities in Mongolia, the next six months will give a clearer idea of the direction Mongolia’s coal market will take.
