  • Introduction
  • Today, when the issue of economic sanctions seems to be very close to being resolved, Iranian steel market is gaining power and opening new prospects, getting on the one hand more attractive for foreign suppliers, but on the other - more challenging.
Over the years of sanctions Iran’s billet capacities rose 50% to around 13 million tpy and continue to develop. That means Iran is now able not only to cover domestic needs but also to turn from former net importer to one of the leading semis suppliers to MENA region and to compete with CIS producers.
At the same time, Iran is restricting steel import by imposing higher tariffs. These barriers make hopes of traditional suppliers to come back to this market less and less realistic. What will be their respond: lower prices, re-orientation to other markets? Or they will be looking for alternative products to offer?

    Key topics to be discussed:

Iran steel market in post-sanctions era.
Iran’s export potential for billets and competition with traditional suppliers in MENA.
On the way to become the world largest DRI producer. But pellets shortage remains?
Oversupply in the domestic longs market – will expected growth in consumption help?
Import constrains as a challenge for foreign suppliers – in search for new opportunities.
