  • Dr. Stephen Ponder, MD, CDE,

    Dr. Ponder is a board certified pediatric endocrinologist from Midland-Odessa, Texas. His commitment to pediatric diabetes stems from his own 46 years of personal experience with the condition, plus over 30 years of professional involvement with direct diabetes care and clinical diabetes research. He is active in numerous national organizations and boards and speaks internationally on diabetes issues in children, including insulin pump therapy and the epidemic of type 2 diabetes in children. He has spent the past 31 summers volunteering his time and expertise in service to the children at the Texas Lions Camp for Children with Diabetes and has served as the camp’s Medical Director since 1990. Always approachable and engaging, Dr. Ponder values the designation of certified diabetes educator (CDE) and takes every opportunity to teach families and children more about their diabetes in order to achieve the best control possible.

    Barbara Schreiner, PhD, RN, CDE, BC-ADM - Dr. Schreiner's career has been a blend of clinical practice, education, research and performance improvement. She has a 35-year history of teaching in both clinical and academic environments. As an advanced practice nurse, she has provided diabetes care and education to children and adults in a variety of settings, including summer camps (and cruise ships). She has been involved with more than 40 research projects, including serving as a co-investigator with the NIH-NIDDK study to prevent and manage type 2 diabetes in children.

    Dr. Schreiner has more than 60 publications (peer-reviewed, book chapters, and abstracts) and has coordinated and/or presented more than 300 continuing education programs (local, regional, and national). She is actively involved with her professional organizations serving as lead faculty for a national training program for diabetes educators and past chair of a content expert panel for a national certification program. Before coming to Capella University, she was a training and performance specialist with a large biotechnology company. Dr. Schreiner has been on faculty with Capella since 2008 as adjunct and currently core faculty in the nursing programs.
