  • Introduction
  • This course is the first in a series of short courses being organised by the newly established Art Conservation Centre to coincide with the inauguration of its premises. This short course will be delivered by art historian Dr Martina Caruana, a PhD holder from the Sorbonne, Paris IV, who will provide an introduction to the study of subject matter in art and will touch upon subjects commonly found in collections in Malta. The 10-hour course will introduce the study of subject matter in art as a discipline and will discuss sources relevant to such research. It will also address the development of particular subjects with reference to the Maltese context; subjects will include Vanitas paintings, the Four Seasons, the Nativity, Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ in art, the Adoration of the Magi, St John the Baptist, aspects of Pauline and Marian iconography, and mythological subject matter.
